Q: CompTIA's Network+ objective 2.9 says:
" Identify the purpose of subnetting..."
Is it safe to assume that we will not have to actually do subnetting on the exam?

A: Yep....as of 1/27/03....most of the feedback I've seen on this question has been along the lines of "know WHAT the purpose of subnetting is, not HOW..."

Good luck - AL

If one cannot understand subnetting maybe
another career is in order. Subnetting is the start of any real
network attainment. Any person serious about networking
should make the endeavor to fully understand Subnetting,
Variable Length Subnet Masking and CIDR as well as Route
Summarization. Some people call it Super Netting.
Troubleshooting routing or switching protocols hinges on the
a good foundation of TCP/IP.
Just my two cents.

You are absolutely right.

However, the poster just wanted to know if calculating subnets was
going to be on the Network+ exam. The average network tech taking this exam with 9-12 months experience (?) doesn't have to do any serious subnetting in his daily job. That would be the job of some of the more senior techs or his manager. And unless the network is growing at the moment it probably is not an issue for them either, e.g. the
subnetting had/has already been planned out/implemented.

When the junior tech is ready to advance onto some of the more
advanced certs, like the ones you have, then he should be worried
about subnetting, supernetting, etc, etc.
