Q: I have the following certs: Comptia Core and Os, Windows 2000 Server (install, config, main) and will write my CCNA in the next couple of weeks. Having a hard time deciding career path, MCSE or CCNP.

A: My personal rule is to not get any cert that I cannot lay some claim (legitimately) to having experience with. So if I occasionally work with servers, but I never touch any routers or switches, I would go for server type certs (If NT, then MCSE; if UNIX, then Solaris; you get the idea).

My biggest fear with job interviews is to claim a cert that they would then ask, "Tell me about your work experience with XYZ." I don't want to look like a loser to the guy interviewing me.

Another thing that should be mentioned, is that you need to do what you like doing. Some people love jacking around with server OS's all day. Others like the network. Do what you like.

If you like servers, MCSE is probably a good start, but I cannot emphasize enough that you would do your career a big favor if you learned UNIX or Linux.
