Q: Concerning Gov. jobs, are there any perks working for the gov. other than hard to get fired?

A: Hard to get fired? I guess... But IT Gov Jobs will not go overseas
like many IT jobs now... It's one of the most secure IT jobs you
will find now and in the future. Retirement benefits are decent too -
though not what they used to be. At least you are more likely to retire from a fed gov IT job...
In the private sector the economy will retire you much earlier without the benefits.

A: I think we should also make the point that there is a difference between working for the gov as a federal employee (GS series) and a contractor working for the gov. Your not protected by unions as a contractor and the chance is there to get fired. I haven't seen it happen myself but it could happen a lot easier.

If GWB and Rummy get their way then it would make it a lot easier to hire /fire federal employees based on merit and loosen the stranglehold that unions have on the gov. IMHO this would be a good thing. The trends also say that they want to contract everything out to companies:
Lockheed, General Dynamics, EDS, Sytex, ACS, Northrup Gruman, just to
name a few of the big players. I work for one of these companies and I
love it. We have jobs all over the world and I don't have the fear of
being fired short of going in and threatening everyone at my job site.
Most of these jobs require a level of clearance going in but sometimes if
you are lucky they will take you in and get the clearance done for you
then you're pretty much like a "made man".
