"CISCO Networking Simplified" is an excellent example of the "how things work" kind of book. It provides an illustrated overview and explanation of today's networking concepts and technologies.

Today it is not unusual for a systems/network administrator or help desk officer to be familiar only with a particular technology. For example, a help desk guy is likely to know how to configure network settings and be an expert in day-to-day troubleshooting. At the same time, he may not know how exactly data gets from the local network to the Internet, and what makes the Internet run. People in such situations would definitely benefit from "CISCO Networking Simplified".

The book can also be used by managers wanting to gain understanding of what networking technologies are available and what to expect from their networking department. It would also be a great read for IT professionals preparing for an interview where a lot of generic networking questions is expected.

There is one thing that sets this book aside from many other networking books - its visual approach. Many illustrations are full-page format and can be used for overhead presentations while explaining networking concepts to non-technical staff.

The book is organized in a clear and logical way - each concept is first introduced by a general overview, and then the more detailed picture is given.

Simple, easy to understand yet informative – the authors successfully accomplished the difficult task of providing as much as necessary rather than "as much as possible" information to fully describe each networking concept and underlying technology.

Here is what the book covers:
